In this article, you will recognize some valuable strategies and ideas to achieve successful classroom management with young learners.

Classroom management is possibly the most difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers. What is it and what does it imply?

What is classroom management?

It is a term used to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behaviour by students. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behaviour.

Results of poor classroom management

Losing control of the classroom results in:

  • A lower rate of academic engagement in the classroom.
  • A bad level of communication of behavioural and academic expectations.
  • An individual learning environment.
  • The inability of teachers to deliver their teaching well.
  • A lower level of achieving learning objectives.

Classroom management with young learners

Classroom management is one of the most important factors concerning young learners’ English teaching because children‘s self-control ability is very poor and teaching children is quite different from teaching middle school students and adults.

In a great sense, we can say that effective classroom management in young learners’ English teaching means successful teaching and learning.

As any children‘s teacher will know, it is not so much the children‘s age that counts in the classroom as how mature they are.

Main reasons for problems in the young learners’ classroom

Most problems encountered by teachers of young learners are due to:

  • The lack of understanding of the developmental differences between children and teenagers.
  • The lack of appropriate classroom management skills to deal with these differences including conceptual and cognitive variations, variations in attention spans and motor skills such as drawing and cutting, as well as social and emotional differences.

An understanding of these differences can help develop the flexibility that teachers of young learners require.
