Teaching a conversation to both low and high levels of EFL learners is very useful to enhance language usage in real-life situations and a great way for learners to develop their listening and speaking skills.
Here’s a practical lesson plan to introduce and practice a conversation in the classroom.
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Use key vocabulary included in the conversation in context.
- Role-play the conversation without books.
- Utilize the target phrases and expressions in real-life situations.
Presentation Stage
1. Setting the scene telling students what the conversation is about and the names of the participants.
2. Presenting the new & key vocabulary. ( words/phrases ) using effective techniques.
3. Asking students to listen to the whole conversation by playing the recording or reading the whole conversation for students and checking understanding by eliciting the meaning of keywords/phrases.
4. Modelling the conversation with one or two brilliant students, then modelling it using two brilliant students.
5. Focusing on language functions in the conversation dividing it into mini dialogues and writing each one on the board to focus on the functions included and how to express it.
Practice Stage
*Listen and repeat:
6. Playing the recording and asking students to listen.
7. Asking students to repeat correctly after the recording or after you and focus on correct pronunciation.
*Role-play the conversation:
8. Asking students to come to the front to produce the conversation using body language, gestures, … (dramatization) & preferably doing that without books.
Production Stage
9. Creating situations that resemble real-life communication & encouraging students to utilize the phrases & expressions taught in the conversation.
